Road to Muse: Honoree Sonia Manzano

As Maria on Sesame Street, Sonia Manzano has been a part of millions of children’s and parents’ lives. Manzano joined the show in 1971, and eventually began writing scripts for the series—receiving 15 Emmys as part of the show’s writing staff.

She has also performed on the New York stage in The Vagina Monologues and The Exonerated, and appeared on Law and Order: SVU. Offscreen, she writes children’s books and series, including the Peabody Award-winning Little Bill.

Raised in the South Bronx, Manzano was inducted into the Bronx Hall of Fame in 2004.

New York Women in Film & Television is honoring Manzano—along with Ellen Barkin, Connie Britton, Robin Wright, Bravo President Frances Berwick, and Nancy Malone—at its annual Muse Awards, being held today (December 12) at the New York Hilton.
