Designing Women MC Announced & ‘Variety’ Highlights NYWIFT Awards

Jessica Alba speaks at the Social Innovation Summit 2014.

Variety
announced the honorees and presenters for New York Women in Film & Television’s 2014 Designing Women Awards this past week. The stars are coming out for these unique awards that honor women in costumes, hair and makeup, including Jessica Alba, Denis Leary and Rose Byrne.

The award for hair design will be presented to Kerrie Smith (Now You See Me, Behind the Candelabra, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, and the Denis Leary-created series Rescue Me). Smith is a frequent stylist for Michael Douglas, recently transforming him into Liberace in HBO’s Behind the Candelabra. She also worked on Imogen Poots in this year’s Need for Speed. Denis Leary will present the award to Smith. They worked together on Rescue Me in 2011. Leary played a fireman, and his foundation, The Leary Firefighters Foundation, recently provided equipment to Detroit Firefighters.

The award for makeup design will be presented to Evelyne Noraz (American Hustle, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Rachel Getting Married). Jessica Alba will be presenting the award to Noraz. They have worked together on such films as Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer, Dear Eleanor and Sin City: A Dame to Kill For. Alba is the founder of The Honest Company, a health and baby care company with a social consciousness.

The award for costume design will be presented to Renée Ehrlich Kalfus (Annie, Chocolat, The Cider House Rules, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape). Rose Byrne recently worked with Kalfus in the upcoming musical film Annie and will present her with the award. Byrne was honored earlier this year with our sister chapter Women In Film’s Max Mara Face of the Future Award.

The Variety Ensemble Award will be presented to costume designer Emma Potter, hair stylist Erin Hicks and makeup artist Cheri Minns of The Angriest Man in Brooklyn.

The emcee for the event will be Michelle Williams, best known as a singer in Destiny’s Child with Beyoncé. A top gospel singer, Williams is also an ambassador for the American Heart Association’s Power to End Stroke campaign, and has performed in Broadway musical tours; she will be a mentor on the upcoming Oxygen reality TV competition Fix My Choir.

The gala will be held Wednesday, June 18. You can purchase tickets here.
