What do Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, HBO’s Confirmation film about Anita Hill, the rom-com It’s Complicated and Showtime’s The Affair all have in common? All feature the work of talented female costume, hair and makeup artists who will be honored at New York Women in Film & Television’s Designing Women gala on Monday, June 13th in NYC!
Now in its 17th year, Designing Women, co-presented by Variety, has become a staple of the NYC entertainment industry’s spring calendar, celebrating the creative alchemy of design, character and story.

Honorees for 2016 include costume designer Sarah Edwards (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Michael Clayton), hair stylist Rose Chatterton (Shades of Blue, The Knick, It’s Complicated) and makeup designer Anita Gibson (Confirmation, Power, Madea’s Big Happy Family). The Variety Ensemble Award will be presented to the costume, makeup and hair design team of The Affair.
Part of the joy of Designing Women – aside from honoring wildly talented women, watching the highlight reels and mingling among costumed mannequins at the after-party – is the warmth and joy of the award presentations. Colleagues of the honorees – often the actors they worked with during the intensely personal design process – are thrilled to celebrate their collaborators. So far, Ray Liotta (Shades of Blue), Will Arnett (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) and Maura Tierney (The Affair) are slated to present – with more to come!
In the coming weeks, we will reminisce about Designing Women’s past with photos, videos and anecdotes here on the NYWIFT blog while we gear up for this year’s event! In the meantime, check out the highlight reel from last year – featuring legendary costume designer Ann Roth, the cast of Orange is the New Black and more!
